Diagnose your retention drops in 30 seconds.

A free YouTube retention curve interpreter that diagnoses drop-off patterns from 5 data points. Identifies whether the issue is intro drop-off (hook problem), mid-video cliff (structure problem), late-tail decay (pacing problem), or a healthy curve — and outputs 3 specific fix recommendations per pattern.

Read your YouTube Studio retention data and enter 5 data points (intro retention, 25% mark, 50%, 75%, end). The interpreter diagnoses the pattern (intro drop-off / mid-video cliff / late-tail decay / healthy) and outputs 3 specific fix recommendations per pattern.

3 fixes for next video

  • Cut your intro by 50%. The retention shows viewers are bouncing before content starts.
  • Replace generic openers ("Hey guys, welcome back") with a direct claim about the topic.
  • Move branding/logo animation to the END card. The first 8 seconds belong to the hook.

Who this is for

YouTubers staring at their retention curve in YouTube Studio with no idea what the shape actually means.

The problem this solves

YouTube Studio shows you a retention curve but doesn't tell you what to DO. Most creators see a 50% drop and shrug. The interpreter encodes the diagnostic patterns (intro drop-off = hook issue, 50% cliff = structure issue, late-tail decay = pacing issue) so you know exactly what to change for the next upload.

YouTube's recommendation algorithm weights retention curve shape more heavily than absolute view count — a 5-minute video with 60% average retention out-performs a 5-minute video with 100k views and 35% retention by 2-3× in suggested-video impressions.

Frequently asked

Where do I find my retention curve?

YouTube Studio → click a video → Analytics tab → Audience tab → "Audience retention" chart. Hover over the curve to see the % retention at each timestamp.

What's a healthy retention curve shape?

A gradual decline: ~80% at the 30-second mark, ~50% at the 50% mark, ~35-40% at the end. Sharp cliffs anywhere along the curve indicate a specific fix-able problem.

What does a steep drop in the first 30 seconds mean?

Hook problem. Either your intro is too long (>8 seconds), your hook doesn't match what viewers expected from the thumbnail/title, or your opening line is generic.

My 50% mark drop is steep — what do I do?

Add a mid-video re-hook. The mid-video cliff hits because viewers lose narrative pull around the midpoint. A pattern-interrupt (surprise claim, callback, story restart) at the 50% mark fixes this — see our YouTube hook formula builder for the re-hook structure.

Late-tail decay — is that even a problem?

Yes if it's steep (drops more than 5% per minute in the final third). Means pacing collapses near the end — usually unedited filler or a CTA that runs too long. Cut 30-60 seconds from the tail.
